I’d say my relationship with Radiohead is pretty normal. I think they’ve made some amazing songs, the perfect album opener with “Everything In Its Right Place”, and that they will have no problem to live on forever with all this love:
Skeet Spirit, a crunk tribute to Radiohead. Instrumentals by DJ Gyngvytus. Don’t miss “The National Headbustaz Anthem”!
Rockabye Baby, lullaby renditions of Radiohead. “Sophisticated enough for people of all ages, but sweet enough to introduce your child to rock’s smartest band”.

“Baby show me your fanny pack. I’ll show you my fanny!”. Fiona Apple in a duet with comedian Zach Galifianakis. Come over and get it.
Some covers… The Regina Spektor version of Madonna’s “Love Profusion”, and a video with Faye Wong covering Sophie Zelmani’s “Going Home” in chinese.

Goggles is a flight sim that uses images loaded in from Google Earth. While other sims are usually too advanced, this is also a very nice and fun way to navigate in the Google world. Both me and the game’s creator are looking for jobs, but I think his viral marketing will be far more successful than mine. :)

Helvetica, love it or hate it, is the focus of a documentary film by Gary Hustwit about typography, graphic design and global visual culture. Featuring interviews with some of the most illustrious and innovative names in the design world, Gary himself answers the question of why he chose to make a film about a typeface:
“Because it’s all around us. You’ve probably already seen Helvetica several times today. I guess I just wondered, “Why?” How did a typeface drawn by a little-known Swiss designer in 1957 become one of the most popular ways for us to communicate our words fifty years later?”
The sans-serif will celebrate it’s 50th birthday in 2007 and the film, currently in post-production, is slated to begin screening at film festivals worldwide early next year. I’m already drooling…

“Many have unanswered questions: from Sydney Bristow to the mysteries of Milo Rambaldi to all things Alias. Now is the chance to ask “The Following” your question. Perhaps you will find the answer that you seek. “The Following” will answer the questions that they can. But remember, not all questions may have answers”.
This is the beginning of the journey towards the massive release of the complete Alias DVD box. I will not reveal my question for “The Following” since I believe this is a step you have to take alone.. the step to discover the endgame!

We’ll see how long it takes before I break. Cerys Matthews, ex Catatonia singer, release her second solo album on August 21. I’ll gladly wait for it, no problem, it’s the first single I want, now and badly! It’s called “Open Roads” and contains a cover of Bowie’s “Soul Love”, which it’s now all about after hearing the sample on Juno. Why does it have to be so short and cut right before the chorus? If it’s not on iTunes, I’ll have to jump off the balcony… Luckily it was.

I prefer the more electronic side of NDW, but this compilation posted for download in the WFMU blog has some interesting songs from an Einstürzende Neubauten perspective:
The person behind the moniker Borsig is actually 15 year old Alexander Hacke who later went on to join Einstürzende Neubauten.
…
Mania D was an all-women No Wave band with, among others, early Neubauten member Gudrun Gut.
This home made compilation, focusing on the year 1981, is more my cup of tea (via the Dissensus forum).

He’s bootleggin’ the music, baby! Sorry, I can’t keep myself from doing Seinfeld references. Mark Vidler, or Go Home Productions, is the UK’s finest bootleg mash-up remixer. He was recently featured on BBC’s Blue Room show, and that 20 minute mix is now available for download. I’m not a big fan of mash-up’s, but when it’s this nicely done I can’t help being impressed.

I’ve been on such a tv-series trip lately, not feeling for movies at all. That changed tonight, being mesmerized by “Hard Candy”. I love minimalism in movies when it’s done right, and this is one of the slickest I’ve seen. Superb cinematography makes this naturalistic psychological drama something even Strindberg might’ve been proud of. The setting is in the Los Angeles home of photographer Jeff, a 32 year old man whom Hayley, a mature 14 year old girl who met him online, suspects to be a pedophile. These two leading parts stand for 95% of the acting in this movie and are amazingly performed by Patrick Wilson and Ellen Page. It’s not an easy thing to watch, but if you’re up for some psychological suspense, I highly recommend it!

An interview and live performance with Neko Case can be streamed from NPR’s World Cafe section. She open-heartedly speaks about her rough teenage years, musical growth, animals and reverb!
- I used to steal lot’s of eggs… That was a big source of nutrition.
It’s an amazing 30 minutes, well worth the listening, ending with and explaining the magnificent “Hold on hold on”.

Grimestep International is an upcoming documentary DVD focusing on the development of grime and dubstep scenes beyond London, where grime is almost declared dead. It’s cooking in the rest of Europe though, and with it’s main focus on Berlin, you’ll get interviews with Matt Shadetek, the Grimetime crew and Sick Girls. Big stars from London such as Skream, Dizzee Rascal and Sway are all interviewed on the road while also checking out Brussels, Copenhagen, Lisbon and Paris. The DVD should be out somtime in September, and there’s already a volume 2 planned for North America and Asia. I’m guessing Goth-Trad will be on that one. For more info listen in on the latest GT podcast…
I’ll be checking out Brussels myself on September 8th! Sub Stance at Aman Café with N-Type and Walsh from London.

Things like this kind of freak me out. Aimee Mann has just finished recording a christmas album due out this fall. “One More Drifter In The Snow” features some of the usual holiday classics plus an original Aimee song, and one by Michael Penn. It’s probably the last thing I expected from her, and I’m not sure I want this, but hopefully there’s a good reason for making it. Better start preparing my collection for it’s first xmas disc…
For more Aimee freakyness, check out the ANS remix version of “Wise Up”.

A cryptic message, or “old notes”, from Thom Yorke, posted in the Radiohead blog. Intro.de think it’s a reaction to the criticism of his solo album in NME magazine.

the only way is down.
Maybe, maybe not. The grade seems about right though.

I was already dying for the second season of Weeds to kick off (Aug 14), and now there’s even more to look forward to. The theme song, “Little Boxes” by Malvina Reynolds, will each week be reinterpreted by a different artist. Those who signed up for this include Elvis Costello, Death Cab for Cutie, Jenny Lewis, the Polyphonic Spree’s Tim DeLaughter and Regina Spektor among others… There will also be a guest appearance from Snoop Dogg, but after his, in my opinion, stupid role in The L Word, I’m not too excited. Someone over at Showtime must really love him.

I’m not gonna try to come up with a theory on why Shanadoo’s “King Kong” is so appealing, but it might just be the smartest pop in a long time? Go on and study those moves before it hits your country. ;)
